Over $30,000 raised for Stand Up for Standardbreds initiative
The Cashmere Club in Christchurch was buzzing with excitement on Friday night as the Sand Up for Standardbred fundraiser kicked off.
The Stand Up for Standardbreds event was organised to raise money for the Standardbred Recycling and Rehoming Canterbury - an initiative set up by a local group who voluntarily take retired harness standardbreds and break them to saddle, before pairing them with new owners.
With over 500 horses rehomed and even more on the waiting list, the labour and feeding costs have quickly added up. It was clear that the group needed to find some extra money to continue the important work they do.
The fundraiser included a three-course buffet dinner, an auction, raffles and live stand-up comedy by award winning Kiwi actor and comedian - Cohen Holloway.
Over $30,000 was raised on Friday night - a massive achievement for the group. This money will help secure the future of rehoming retired standardbreds.
